Kin focused his senses and pulled down a deep breath, attempting to catch Hella’s scent. The smell of water and flowers was too strong, drowning out everything else. He huffed and kept walking, gaze scanning the building now, seeking a way to it that wouldn’t draw attention to himself.

A figure suddenly plummeted into view, falling from one of the ivory towers.

His stomach plummeted with her when he noticed the colour of her hair.

Blue.

Hella.

His heart thundered, hammering a painful, hard beat against his ribs as he stood immobile, shocked by the sight of her and struggling to process what he was seeing. She flipped and fought her short black dress.

And hit the water feet first.

MacKinnon kicked his boots off and dove into the water, swam hard with the current and fought to keep his head above the surface as he was swept along. The water was colder than he had expected, sapping his heat, but the adrenaline that spiked his blood as he saw she hadn’t emerged yet was enough to keep him going, had him kicking harder, desperately propelling himself towards where she had struck the surface.

He dove the moment he reached it, legs pumping furiously as he scoured the water for her. He grimaced as the current slammed him into a rock, knocking vital air from his lungs, and gripped it and shoved off. The river had to be at least thirty feet deep. Where was she?

There.

She tumbled head over heels, legs flailing, and he wanted to growl when he saw her hands were still bound. What the hell had the nymph been thinking? Why take her and push her off a tower?

His heart lurched as she was smashed against a boulder and spun away from it, her actions growing weak and sluggish. He kicked harder and reached for her, stretched his arms as far as he could and tried to grab her. He missed. Godsdammit. He growled, releasing precious air, grabbed the nearest rock and pressed his feet to it. He kicked off, shooting towards her, and snared her.

The moment he wrapped his arms around her, his strength tried to leave him, relief that she was safe in them stealing it from him. She wasn’t safe yet. He clung to the remaining shreds of his strength and kicked upwards, propelling them both towards the surface. He gasped for air as they breached it, his head fogging as his body greedily devoured the oxygen.

Hella spluttered and coughed, shaking in his arms as she tightly gripped his forearm.

Kin turned her to face him.

Could only stare as he got a good look at her, struck dumb by the sight of her.

She was beautiful.

He told himself it was just the spell. It was all a lie.

But gods, she was beautiful.

She looked as if she fitted into this realm, as if she belonged in it, with her wide luminous emerald eyes, flawless pale skin and her rosy cheeks. She could be fae. He tucked her to his chest with one arm and brushed the tangled threads of her azure hair behind her ear with his other hand, revealing her very human ears.

She stared at him as they were swept downstream, not resisting him as he carefully navigated the river with her, pushing off boulders that were in their path and keeping her safely tucked against him.

As they entered calmer waters and their pace slowed, she finally spoke, and the sound of her voice altered something fundamental inside him, stirring his soul and warming his blood.

“You’re not fae,” she murmured throatily, a soft but flinty quality to her voice that plunged his thoughts firmly into the gutter. His lass had a voice for the bedroom. “You’re not a nymph either. If I had to guess—” She looked him over, heating his blood now, making him burn for her as she took him in. “Some kind of shifter maybe?”

“Wolf,” he grunted, unable to manage more than that. Something about this female had his tongue tied, his heart thundering, and him trembling like a lad as her soft curves pressed against him.

“What’s a wolf doing in Lucia?” she whispered and then undid him by clutching the front of his Henley, twisting it into her little fist as if she didn’t want to let him go. “Although, I’m not going to complain about the rescue or anything. It’s quite appreciated.”

She didn’t seem inclined to get away from him. Kin wasn’t sure he had ever felt quite as pleased by something as he was by that or how she nestled closer to him. His wolf calmed as she pressed against him, clinging to him, her gaze on his face. His female was in his arms. Safe. Close. He gathered her closer still, unable to stop himself, and wrapped both arms around her, pinning her to him.

Her green eyes sparkled, bewitching him.

Beckoning him.

The cliffs gave way to gentle sloping banks lined with pines and she glanced at them as the river slowed to a crawl. He wanted to deny her even when he knew he couldn’t. They could safely leave the water now. There was no reason for her to remain in his arms. He reluctantly swam towards the bank, stood when the water was shallow enough and carried her onto dry land.

Kin set her down on the soft moss and stepped back, trying not to notice how her wet dress clung to her body, revealing it to his hungry gaze, or how her little nipples beaded before his eyes, as if they ached for his touch. He shifted his right leg forward a little, attempting to alleviate the ache in his cock, as hard as stone for her.

She had to see what she was doing to him.

There was no hiding it in his wet jeans.

She backed off a step and fidgeted, wringing some of the water from her dress. The silver shackles around her wrists glinted in the light, drawing his gaze to them, and he growled at the red marks on her skin where they had rubbed it raw.

She froze and lifted her head a little, enough that she could meet his gaze.

And flash cleavage at him.

He would have growled at that too if it hadn’t been for the wary edge her eyes gained or how cautious she sounded as she asked, “What’s a wolf doing in Lucia?”

“I came for you.”

She stiffened and straightened, her chest rising and falling more rapidly as she stared at him. “Came for me?”

Kin reached for her cuffs and she darted back and tucked her hands against her chest as her eyes widened and she swallowed hard.

“You’re the one who howled.” She blinked at him and the sight of her afraid of him tore at his soul, had him aching with a need to comfort and calm her, and show her that he wasn’t a danger to her. Not like she was thinking. “What do you want with me?”

He lined up some bullshit about seeing her in trouble and playing the white knight, it being just something he was prone to do.

And then blurted, “You’re my fated female.”

He lined up some bullshit about seeing her in trouble and playing the white knight, it being just something he was prone to do.

And then blurted, “You’re my fated female.”

He was sure of it as he breathed in her scent, as it calmed his wolf and gave him strength, and drew him to her. His gaze lowered, taking in her curves, and he wanted to growl. Wanted to howl. Throw his head back and let it all out because he couldn’t contain this feeling of sheer joy that swept through him.

After all these years, he had found her.

This lass had been made for him, and he wanted her as he had never wanted a female before her.

The mulish twist to her lips and the amount of distrust that shone in her eyes said she didn’t want him though.

His instincts demanded he seize her and bend her to his will, because she was his and she would surrender to him.

Kin tamped them down and relied on his mind instead, because letting his instincts steal control of him was a sure-fire way of losing her. She had been through a lot, had been taken by force by nymphs and he was sure now that she had chosen to leap from the balcony of the tower to escape them. Everything about this female screamed that she would put him in the dirt if he made a wrong move with her.

So he needed to make the right one.

He needed to earn her trust.

Saving her from the river should have been enough, but she had a wild look about her, one that would have told him she was frightened even if he hadn’t been able to sense it in her. She needed more than a rescue to win her over. She needed to see that he was on her side and not interested in treating her in ways other men had.

And he knew the perfect way to show her that.

“I can break those cuffs.” He jerked his chin towards them.

Her green eyes darted down to them and back to his, and she scoffed. “I doubt that.”

He frowned at her, because in all his years, no one had taken a look at him and questioned his strength. “I can, lass. I’m old. Strong.”

And he wanted to show her just how strong he was. He wanted her to admire that strength and fall into his arms, as his fated female should. He huffed. He was getting ahead of himself again, letting his instincts influence his thoughts. Many a male at his pack had made the mistake of trying to win a female by bending her to his will, convinced that she would give in and accept him.

Not one of them had that female now.

He was damned if he would drive his fated one away from him like that.

He leashed a growl. If she really was his fated one.

She reluctantly edged her hands towards him.

Kin was the one who hesitated now. A war erupted inside him as he stared at her outstretched hands and the silver manacles that linked them. He really shouldn’t do this. He fought the need that pressed him to say it, that pushed the words up his throat as he lifted his gaze to her face and lost himself in her eyes again.

“I want a boon in return,” he murmured, feeling hazy as he breathed in her scent, as his wolf side paced and growled, goading him into obeying his instincts.

“What?” She frowned at him, a wary edge to her green eyes as she held his gaze.

Her pulse was off the scale, rocketing in his ears, and he told himself to forget it, to take back what he had said because he was pushing her too hard. So much for not listening to his instincts. It had been two seconds and he was already trying to dominate her, to make her his whether she wanted it or not.

“A wee kiss.” He braced himself, sure she would lash out at him or storm away, that he had ruined everything by being too forward with her.

She looked as if she was contemplating striking him, but then she thrust her hands towards him and tipped her chin up, a fire in her eyes as she glared at him.

His bonnie lass was a wild one, just as he’d expected.

Kin flexed his fingers and shook them to try to stop them from trembling, not wanting her to notice how she fired him up and how deeply she affected him, stealing his strength and making him weak.

He drew down a breath as he took hold of her right cuff. It hitched as their skin made contact, as a sizzle chased up his arm and his gaze leaped to meet hers. Her green eyes were wide again and gods, he was close to her. Her scent and heat swirled around him, fogging his mind, making it hard for him to focus on anything other than how tempting her soft pink lips were.

Lips that would yield to him soon.

He bit back a groan and went to work, careful not to rub her wrists with the sharp edge of the shackle. They were stronger than they looked. He had figured he could easily break them, but they were more than just steel. It struck him that was the reason she feared him, and the reason she was happy to pay his fee for her freedom. There was a spell in the restraints, one that had to be inhibiting her powers.

His beautiful lass had been more than chained. Her magic, a fundamental part of who she was, had been stolen from her.

He growled and dug his fingers beneath the thick metal, strained and refused to give up this time. His wee witch wouldn’t be treated in such a manner. Not when he could do something about it. The edge of the shackle bit into his fingers, drawing blood, but he kept at it, yanking the two sides apart.

The lock gave, the cuff opening so suddenly he almost hit Hella in the face as his hand flew up. She ducked backwards and scowled at him. He issued her an apologetic look and then tackled her other cuff.

The second it opened and the restraints dropped to the ground, he reached for her, eager for his reward.

Only the wily witch snatched something from her pocket, brought it to her lips and disappeared with a single finger salute in his direction as the small bottle fell towards the moss.

Kin snatched it on a vicious growl before it could hit the ground, and wanted to howl when he straightened and opened his fist and spotted a label on the dark blue bottle.

Drink me.

He sniffed it. Some kind of potion? In her haste, she hadn’t drunk it all. There was a drop left.

Shouts echoed through the trees from the direction of the castle and Kin stared at the bottle. If this didn’t work, the nymphs would hunt him down. The shackles the witch had worn would become his prison instead. He sucked down a steadying breath, brought the bottle to his lips and tipped the drop onto his tongue.

A howl tore up his throat as every molecule in his body vibrated and then burned, and he was sure the damned potion was rearranging his entire body into a new order.

And then suddenly he was standing where he had been in the fae town in Geneva.

“Oh, fuck,” a sultry, oh-so-bewitching voice muttered, rousing his blood and sharpening his senses.

He locked gazes with Hella.

A heartbeat passed, a moment in which he felt sure she would do the sensible thing and not provoke him any further.

And then she pivoted on her heel and ran.

What Readers Are Saying...

★★★★★

This is a great series for the PR fan because you get a little bit of everything... witches, elves, vampires, shifters, demons all mixing with the human hunters. There are plenty of characters to keep you entertained along with a really engaging storyline and lots of steamy romance to make it all worthwhile. And my FAVORITE part of the series... the strong, kick your butt female characters!
